[Interschool (October) ] Post-match reflections SST V Bukit Merah @ 11 October

I've added one more question to set a target for improvement(s) on the holidays
1. Rate your performance today from 1 to 10 and justify your rating
   i.e.
What I do well today?
What could have been better?
Did I apply what I have learned in training? If yes, how?
2. What did you learn as a player/spectator from the match today?
3. Do you think the team did well today?
4. How can you help the team to improve?
5. What do you think the team can do together to improve?
6. Who do you think is the man of the match today and justify your selection
7. What do you aim to improve in the coming holidays and how?

7 comments:

  1. 1. 6-7/10
I did well as i constantly pressured the opponent in front and forced them to make several mistakes. I also had more confidence as I was not constantly pressured by the opponent and was conscious of my touch and had an easier time controlling the ball as compared to the other matches I've played. I did well in passing as I managed to win headers and aim them directly to where my teammates is instead of just heading for the sake of touching the ball. I also had a few chances near goal like the chip shot which hit the crossbar and the pass to an open man in the goal area although the pass was bouncing. I was more aware of my teammates', opponents' and my own positions and looked for open spaces to support the man with possession.
The second half was not as good as the first. I was tackled and got a cramp on my left leg. I was running less at that point and was not supporting. I was constantly at the back just like a fifth defender and could not push up as quickly as i wanted to. However, I still manage to string a few passes but it could have been better if i could pass harder. From this, it is evident that i was lacking fitness and should build on my strength and stamina.
    2. I learnt that communication is key and is lacking in the team. Although i tried to encourage others to communicate, they were to focused on the match and kept their mouth shut. I was also quiet from time to time. As a result, we couldn't make the passes connect and lost the ball in the midfield.
    3. I think that the team did relatively well. Most of the goals conceded were caused by mistakes. If we can reduce these mistakes, we could have won the game. However, other than these mistakes, I think that the team did well in playing as a team. We tried to pass to each other although some didn't make it through as we were not communicating.
    4. I think that i can help the team to improve by reminding them to communicate and keeping the morale and focus at a desired level. Sometimes, players loose their temper and focus. They makes mistakes and start arguing. As captain, it is my responsibility to keep their mind in the game.
    5. I think that the team needs to, other than communicate, learn to support others. There were many instances where the wingers lacked support and have to force their way through. If there was someone supporting, the wingers wouldn't have to fight a lot of pressure and the team would have an easier time keeping possession. Another thing for the team to do is to increase their physical attributes, such as strength and stamina.
6.I think that jovan and matthew have played exceptionally well. They were chasing the ball and constantly pressured the opponent. Jovan showed determination in his defending and tackled the ball away many times. He also was able to make clear judgement of whether to clear or to pass to someone else. Matthew was exceptional because he showed his dribbling skills by skilling through the opponent although eventually he lose the ball but gains us a throw-in or pass it to another teammate.
    7. I aim to improve my control of the ball as well as my crosses/chip through-balls. I think that our team's strength is a fast paced counter attack where we had many chances. thus, as a midfield player, i am to perfectly control the ball and improve my vision and accuracy of my pass to keep the counter attack. I would like to train with someone else by controlling passes which are generally hard to control. i would train my crossing by doing the crossbar challenge.

  2. 1. I would honestly give myself a 5-6. I was unable to launch a successful attack despite the number of chances I had. I felt that my positioning was also way off and my stamina was lower than I had expected. I managed to get two shots on target, however, they were very low-powered and did not trouble the goalkeeper. Even though this was the first match in quite a while that I managed to actually get a proper shot, I felt that I still could have done better.
    2. I learnt how to control the pace of the game, and actually managed to perform several through passes. I also learnt the importance of communication and as what coach said, 'support play', where a player has to keep moving in order to provide support for his teammates even when he does not have the ball.
    3. I personally felt that the team did not do very well, due to the absence of some of our core players; the regular starters, and we had to make do with only 12 players, so I felt that the team could have done a lot better.
    4. As a striker, the only way I can help the team is by attacking more precisely and scoring more goals, but as a team player, there are some times where I must drop back to defend (e.g. corners and free kicks) and clear the ball away as I believe that many of our players are not confident enough for such situations and until they are, I will have to keep dropping back at times.
    5. The team must really work on passes as many of our passes are intercepted. Most players either pass too softly or they pass without looking for the right person, and ends up passing straight to an opponent, giving away possession easily. Other than that, many of our players need to work on their aggression as from what I notice they tend not to go in for challenges, and instead let the opponents run in for the ball while they jog next to them.
    6. I would say that Timothy deserves to be the man of the match. He worked tirelessly in the defence to clear the balls away and even though he accidentally caused the first goal, I do not blame him for it as in his position at that time there was nothing he could do to prevent the ball from rebounding off him.
    7. I aim to improve my stamina and dribbling abilities as I have noticed that since I'm a striker, most of the time I'll be the one leading the counter attack, and it would be difficult to turn back to wait for the rest of the team, hence, in most situations I will have to go for goal when there's a chance and that will require me to dribble really quickly and efficiently. I will have to do many drills that will help me improve on that in order to prepare myself for January.

    7/10
    What I do well today?
I tried my best to chase after the ball and I made some tackles, interception and passes. I supported the defense by pressuring, supporting from the back and tackling. I supported my team mates after passing to them to create options.
What didn’t I do well today?
My stamina was very low at that time so I could not help support my team mates as well as I can. I am still scared to head the ball so I could not help during corners. Although I was a midfielder, I supported the defense more, so I could not support much of the attack. Our opponents were very fit and fast but I was not.
Did I apply what I have learned in training? If yes, how?
Yes. Supporting the player after passing instead of just standing there or walking. I support my team mate at the back when they were going to tackle the opponent, incase he does not succeed in tackling him.
    2. What did you learn as a player/spectator from the match today?
I have learnt that warm up is very crucial because most of my team mates and I struggled in the first few minutes of the game which coach later pointed out that we did not warm up properly.
    3. Do you think the team did well today?
No. We conceded 2 goals in the first few minutes of the game because we were not warmed up. We were unfit compared to the other team. Our team mates “cleared” the ball back to the keeper side which was very dangerous. In the end we concede many goals and scored none as the attack was weak.
    4. How can you help the team to improve?
I could have commanded the defenders to move to different places for a better defense formation. I can work better in my heading and dribbling. I can try to increase my stamina and aggressiveness too.
    5. What do you think the team can do together to improve?
We could have concentrated more on the warm ups. We could have communicated more as we had cases where multiple defenders where crowding around one corner and two team mates headed the same ball.
    6. Who do you think is the man of the match today and justify your selection
I think Qayyum is the man of the match. He performed his best during the match. He was really concentrated in the game and made some good tackles with little mistakes. The opposing school deprived him by laughing at him just because of his physical size but he ignored them and concentrated on the game. Considering the mocking he did really well.
    7. What do you aim to improve in the coming holidays and how?
    I aim to:
    - Get my whole body stronger by endurance training.
    - Train my stamina and increase my speed by running at least once a week.
    - Learn how to beat a defender by watching video tutorials and carrying them out.
    - Eat healthier by watching carefully what I eat and research online for food that is good and bad.
    - Make myself be less afraid of heading the ball by practicing heading.

  4. 1. I would give myself a 5 or 6 as I made some blunders and let in two goals. I also was ineffective in my drop kicks as they did not go far but just spun off to the near wide areas. The thing I did well today was to come up to narrow down the striker's angle. I also was able to catch high balls except one which was deflected and went in. I applied the technique of catching the ball properly and coming out to narrow down the angle of the striker.

    2. I learnt that staying on your toes is very important as I did not do this and it resulted in my first conceded goal. I also realized that staying focussed also was important as some of the goals in the first half of the C-Div match were due to the lack of focus.

    3. The team as a whole was not very good as we were not prepared for the game and we did not take the warm-up seriously which resulted in us taking a long time to settle in the game which cost us a few goals.

    4. First of all, we can all take warm-up seriously to get our body ready for the game. Secondly, we can also train our fitness by going on regular runs after school or even during recess we can run around the field.

    5. The team together can improve their fitness by jogging and running. Also they can help each other tune their skills by pairing up and helping to train each other on their ball skills and footwork. For example two players can work on their heading.

    6. I believe that Qayyum is the MOTM as he gave it his all and committed with accuracy and did not give away too many fouls. He was also commanding in defence and was not intimidated by the bigger BMSS players.

    7. I will aim to increase my upper body strength and improve my diving. I can improve my upper body strength by working out in a gym and improve my diving by doing drills together with a few other keepers.

  5. I would give myself a 4-5.
I was not fast enough to catch up with the much faster strikers and I failed to make good clearances. In addition , i felt like I did not command the defense well, not being able to tell my team mates what to do.
I was also not focused and got beaten multiple times.
I could command my defense better and learn how to read the strikers better , especially those who ran down the line near the goal and not allow them to cross.
I applied my knowledge of player movement and passing to play balls to my teammates , and the stamina that i trained.
From that day , I learned that our team is weak in defending high balls and we are not aggressive enough to hold off the very strong players. We should also learn how to prevent through balls and stop them.
I don't think we did well.
I can help by providing support for my team mates as we had poor attacking as our main attackers were lacking help.
    We can communicate more.
I think Rachit should be the man of the match as he made many very important and good saves.
I want to improve my stamina so I can run back and forth to provide support when attacking and run back to defend too.
In addition , I want to improve my speed as I was not fast enough to catch up to the other players who were much faster than me. Next , I want to become stronger and more aggressive as I was pushed down or shoved aside easily by the other players.
Lastly , I want to learn how to deal with high balls and make better clearances.

    i.e.

I would rate myself 3-4. Often I was facing the wrong direction thus I wold give myself a lower score.

    What I do well today?

I made a few good runs to give options to the player on the ball.

    What could have been better?

I could have been better at positioning myself instead of passing back to the defenders.

Did I apply what I have learned in training? If yes, how?

Yes. I made some good passes to players that were open, like we learnt during training.

    2. What did you learn as a player/spectator from the match today?

I learnt that I should position myself better in order to receive balls sent at me.

    3. Do you think the team did well today?

I think that the defending was quite good as the defenders seemed to work very hard to get back the ball.

    4. How can you help the team to improve?

I think I can help by receiving the balls more fluently and create more chances for the team.

    5. What do you think the team can do together to improve?

I think we can improve our fitness together as many of us were exhausted later on into the game.

    6. Who do you think is the man of the match today and justify your selection

Rachit. I think he deserves man of the match as he made a lot of good saves and did not let in many goals in the second half.

    7. What do you aim to improve in the coming holidays and how?

I aim to improve by exercising more to increase my stamina.

My rating is about 5-6.I made clean tackles and helped to support the play.
    What I do well today?
i made clean tackles and managed to mark my man. I also helped to support the forward plays.
    What could have been better?
Did I apply what I have learned in training? If yes, how?
Yes.I did one touch passing and support play.
    2. What did you learn as a player/spectator from the match today?
SST lacks pace and we need to practice our fitness since we are already tired after the first few minutes
    3. Do you think the team did well today?
The team has improved significantly from the beginning of the year.Although we did get thrashed, we improved in our defending and attacking.
    4. How can you help the team to improve?
Our weakness are high balls and we lack communication. We need to communicate more in the game to be aware of our surroundings. We need to maintain possession to slow down the game.
    5. What do you think the team can do together to improve?
We can make our passes more accurate and we need to use through balls. Since our strikers are quick we can apply through balls to create chances better.
    6. Who do you think is the man of the match today and justify your selection
I think Rachit should be the man of the match. He made vital and crucial saves to prevent our opponents from scoring more.Although he can improve on the way he clears the ball, he did numerous amounts of saves. The goals he conceded could not have been prevented. Since they were all errors from the defence.
    7. What do you aim to improve in the coming holidays and how?
I wish to improve my stamina and make better clearance.I need to be more aggressive and be more confident in my tackles. I need to practice the way i receive and control the ball.I also need to practice my clearances as most of the tackles i did, i basically pass back to them.
